Myanmar garment worker allegations tracker Through collaboration with partners and allies inside and outside Myanmar, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is monitoring the significant increase in labour and human rights abuses of garment workers across the country since the military takeover. This cooperation has enabled the creation of our tracker of allegations of garment worker abuse. This tracker captures over 100 cases of alleged labour and human rights abuses perpetrated against at least 60,800 garment workers, revealing widespread and systemic abuse of garment workers in international brands’ supply chains. Resistance, harassment and intimidation – Garment worker abuse under Myanmar’s Military Rule Myanmar’s military illegally seized power on 1 February 2021. Since then, garment workers – mostly women – have been on the front line of the country’s Civil Disobedience Movement, risking their lives and livelihoods to demand an end to the dictatorship and restoration of democracy in Myanmar. Understanding Impact – Research insights from Better Work 2017-2022 Can jobs in garment supply chains fulfil their development potential and not be stuck in a “race to the bottom”? If so, under what conditions, and what is Better Work’s role in helping enable these conditions? To better understand the dynamics of achieving more decent jobs in garment supply chains, Better Work and its engagement with thousands of workplaces offer an entry point for comparison with non-Better Work firms, who tend to be less connected with well-known brands and retailers.
