Sustainable diets are far from assured for many people. Acquisition of a nutritious sustainable diet is predicated upon the availability of income, the inadequacy of which inhibits many people from realizing proper sustenance throughout the year. The occupational status of the majority of workers in rural areas and urban informal economy of the Global South highlights a weak income generation potential, which impedes the procurement of a sustainable diet. Instituting a living wage and income and other proactive policy support measures would go a long way in overcoming the shortfall and allow many more people to lead a decent life.

Persistent problems have been documented in the effectiveness of social auditing and ethical certification schemes when it comes to preventing, detecting and addressing forced labour. In recent years the social compliance industry has awoken to these limitations and there is growing discussion of the need to improve forced labour detection and remediation systems. To date, reform efforts have centred around improving ethical certification standards and audit methodologies on paper, but there is little evidence that incremental improvements are leading to meaningful change on the ground.

This report highlights the key findings of a Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre (Modern Slavery PEC) research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The project was funded through an open call for proposals to examine the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on modern slavery. The project explored the impact of the pandemic on the management of modern slavery risk in Indian fashion supply chains.
