Ripple Effects – Quantifying Water Risks in the Aparrel Supply Chain
Many stages of the manufacture of apparel are significant users of water, from dyeing to raw material manufacture. Companies in the apparel industry should be talking about and reporting on their use of water and how they are exposed to water-related risk. The availability of water is expected to be increasingly stressed in many key apparel manufacturing regions as a result of climate change, inefficient use and untreated disposal. This could threaten production of textiles in many key regions and thus disrupt supply chains. Planet Tracker used open source data to map the location of apparel factories across the globe and consider the current level of water stress they are exposed to and how this is projected to change over time.
