Social and environmental audits and certifications are considered key tools for corporate due diligence. But how effective are they, really?

In this webinar, we will present the findings of a new study by the Bangladesh Institute for Labor Studies (BILS), conducted as part of the MAP Bangladesh project. The study examines the effectiveness of leading certifications and multi-stakeholder initiatives in the Bangladeshi garment industry, including GOTS, GRS, OEKO-TEX STeP, amfori BSCI, and the Fair Wear Foundation.

In addition, we will present the results of an analysis by FEMNET that combines the study’s findings with insights from worker-based monitoring (WBM) and community-based monitoring (CBM) conducted as part of the MAP Bangladesh project. Together, these studies highlight where private monitoring systems contribute to improving labor and environmental conditions—and where their limitations lie.

The webinar is aimed at civil society organizations, academics, students, and anyone else interested in the topic. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for questions and a group discussion on the implications of the findings for effective human rights and environmental due diligence.
