Delay in final spurt – Altmaier blocks draft supply chain law

The key points for a supply chain law announced for the end of August are being delayed. The reason for this is the continued blockade of Minister of Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier, who is trying to prevent a legal duty of care for companies. An alliance of 100 organizations is calling for an end to this blockade.

Last Wednesday, the cornerstones of a supply chain law should actually come to the Federal Cabinet. However, with unacceptable proposals, Altmaier is blocking the legislative process. A supply chain law should only apply to companies with more than 5,000 employees without a civil law enforcement mechanism. Peter Altmaier thus clearly departs from earlier Key points of the Ministry of Labour and Development and threatens to dilute the supply chain law.

To prevent this from happening, together with the Supply Chain Act initiative, we are calling for #Dasmussdrinsein – for a supply chain law to work:

  • Duty of care along the entire value chain, including liability for non-compliance
  • State authorities must be empowered to control human rights and environmental protection requirements and sanction companies
  • Recognising the link between human rights violations and environmental degradation
  • The possibility for victims of human rights violations abroad of companies to sue German courts for damages
  • Applicability of the law also for smaller companies with large human rights risks
