FEMNET meets ELIASOL

An 18-hour train ride didn’t stop a group of fair fashion advocates from FEMNET from traveling to Hungary in October to discuss high-visibility campaigns, educational work on sustainable textile supply chains, and clothing swaps with Hungarian activists.

As part of the EU project “Re-Thread the Future,” representatives from the Hungarian NGO Világjáró Önkéntes Nonprofit Kft. and FEMNET are collaborating to deepen young people’s knowledge of the production, use, and recycling of clothing through action-oriented events and educational formats. The project participants met in Budapest to discuss (preliminary) findings, share experiences, and network.

FEMNET presented a workbook—currently in development—for display in youth centers. Through video portraits of people along the textile supply chain, the workbook prompts participants to reflect on their own relationship with clothing and the global impacts of the apparel industry. Interactive exercises deepen this exploration. Feedback from the workshop will be incorporated into the workbook, which will be available for download in various languages by the end of the year.

At the clothing swap party on Saturday afternoon—organized by the Hungarian project partners (on Instagram at _eliasol) with support from students at Budapest Metropolitan University—around 450 kilograms of clothing were swapped. Sewing workshops, information booths (including one by Fashion Revolution Budapest), and a color consultation turned the clothing swap into a real event. The participants from Kleiderei Köln who traveled to the event were especially able to take home inspiration for their own clothing swap events—it was a varied afternoon for everyone, during which many a secondhand treasure was found.
