NEWSLETTER - June 2019

Dear friends of FEMNET,

100 years of the ILO, 50 years of Primark – can we say a birthday wish? Sewing women should finally be able to do their work non-violently! After all, in June the ILO decides whether an international regulation against violence in the workplace will finally be introduced. No improvement is in sight at Primark: The fast-fashion giant is massively exploiting workers in producing countries. Actions will therefore take place throughout Germany around 13/06/2019 – perhaps also near you?

In today's newsletter you will also find how student initiatives are committed to fair fashion and how the city of Stuttgart has bought sustainable work shoes on a large scale. We are also very pleased about our growth in the board and team of FEMNET.

Wishing you an interesting read

100 years of the ILO: Time for laws #againstviolence against women!

In 2019, the International Labour Organization (ILO) celebrates its 100th anniversary. birthday. The ILO's highest body will meet from 10 to 21 June and will decide, among other things, on an international convention on violence and harassment in the workplace. This concerns in particular the fight against gender-based violence, i.e. in particular violence against women by men. A staggering number of women worldwide are experiencing workplace violence, and an international convention and national effective laws are long overdue.

The FEMNET campaign work #against violence also continues: You can get an impression of our Bonn street action on Rana Plaza Memorial Day (24 April) in the action video. We would like to thank you for the broad support in donation and participation campaigns!

Street theatre workshop in Bonn on 13-14 July 2019

Our street theatre workshop is about textile protest: On 13 and 14 July 2019, professional theatre educators will teach how we can express the topic of working conditions in the textile industry. For this purpose, we get to know various elements of action theatre (movement, dance, rhythm, music, speaking choirs, etc.). Together we develop our own performance and take it to the streets in Bonn's city centre. Interested people from other cities are also welcome!

Participation in the workshop is free of charge! Registration with This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Well prepared for educational assignments at universities

Our Training for multipliers On 10 and 11 May 2019, it addressed the question of ‘how?’: How can I prepare optimally for my workshop as a multiplier? How can I deal with various challenges during a workshop? How do I encourage students to act? To support us, we were able to win three exciting speakers, who conducted a presentation and speech training with us, worked out target group-specific preparations and methods and talked about the Germanwatch’s ‘hand print’ approach new courses of action for students.

Stuttgart's pilot project: Cobblers, treat yourself to new lasts!

Stuttgart's pilot project for the procurement of sustainable work and safety shoes was successfully completed in cooperation with FEMNET: Up to 5,500 shoes were advertised for around 1,700 employees. Social and environmental standards were included in the assessment and ultimately made the difference: Manufacturers who have set out to produce more sustainably have been rewarded with orders. It turned out that this made little difference in terms of price.

Final report on the Stuttgart pilot project...

Welcome to FEMNET Sabine Kaldonek!

Sabine Kaldonek has been working at FEMNET in fundraising since May 2019.

How did you come up with fair clothing?

As part of a training course to become a CSR manager. We have developed the course unit "Sustainable Supply Chains" using the example of the textile industry. My view of the fashion industry has changed since then at the latest. The dimensions of our textile consumption with all the negative effects have become very clear to me.

What motivates you?

The combination of expertise and passion that I experience at FEMNET is great. The commitment to human rights in fashion, supported by many committed supporters, is consistently pursued. It works – not just on the ground. It also reaches more and more people to get excited about sustainable consumption.

Welcome to the team!
