Joint press release by the Global Nature Fund (GNF), FEMNET and the Schäder Foundation

Bonn. Workwear, bedding or fabric bags – companies are wholesalers of textiles. At the same time, textiles are at the heart of the sustainability debate. How can the purchasing of this product group be made socially and ecologically sustainable and make its contribution as part of a company-wide sustainability strategy?

In order to raise public awareness of the relevance and feasibility of this lever for more global justice, Global Nature Fund and FEMNET, in cooperation with the Schäder Foundation, invite representatives from business, science and politics to Darmstadt. The conference discusses the challenges and opportunities of sustainable textile procurement, examines detection systems, presents best practice examples of previous companies and offers practical support for its own implementation. Be there too!

Conference "Consistently sustainable – fair textiles in companies"
22 September 2022 ⁇ 13:00 - 19:00
Schäder-Forum, Goethestraße 2, 64285 Darmstadt

To the background

When developing sustainability strategies that make processes and products more resource- and environmentally friendly, procurement focuses on goods and services that flow directly into the products. The potential of textile purchasing is often overlooked, whereby the annual gross turnover of workwear in Germany alone is around one billion euros, so that a sustainable purchasing of this product group results in enormous potential for the improvement of working conditions and ecological balance.

The problems of the global textile industry are well known. Low wages, forced overtime and a lack of building security are only part of the grievances that are commonplace in supply factories of European textile companies. An enormous water consumption, chemicals in rivers and a share of around ten percent of global CO2 emissions make textiles a highly critical product, even from an ecological point of view.

In view of this situation, the decision to pay attention to environmentally and socially sustainable production when purchasing is obvious. But those who decide to do so are confronted with a wide range of sustainability standards, the classification and evaluation of which is a challenge in itself. Even the question of what ‘sustainable’ textiles actually are is difficult to answer due to the high complexity of the textile supply chain.

As part of the Fair Wear Works project, FEMNET e.V. and the Global Nature Fund (GNF) are helping companies to review their textile purchases and make them sustainable in the future. The project partners will offer initial consultation, impulse or information events until the end of 2022. The conference "Consistently sustainable - fair textiles in companies" is part of the project, which is funded by ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Postcode Lotterie and Fairtrade Deutschland. The Schäder Foundation has been promoting dialogue between social sciences and practice since 1988.
