Pressemeldungen - Gegen Gewalt an Textilarbeiterinnen 08 March 2019 International Women's Day: Stop the massive violence against women in fashion factories! Blue Hands #Against Violence: FEMNET calls for solidarity in Bonn with the start of the campaign. One in three textile workers are victims of structural violence in the workplace. Fashion brands aren't doing enough to protect women in their suppliers. For this reason, FEMNET is launching the campaign #Counterviolence on International Women's Day. With hands painted in blue, the supporters invite you to participate in order to set a sign against violence against women. For 800 million women, violence is a bitter part of everyday work: They are harassed and insulted, physically and psychologically approached. With the #metoo movement, there was an outcry around the world. The reactions show how difficult the situation is for those affected – talking about it means risking their livelihoods. But they have also shown that solidarity works. The fashion industry in particular is known for exploitative working conditions. The situation is particularly dramatic in countries such as India and Bangladesh, where it is taboo for women to even talk about violence. Nine out of ten garments come from such low-wage countries. ‘We are told that we are worthless. Female workers are silenced by violence or threats’, says Kalpona Akter, one of Bangladesh’s best-known labour rights activists. FEMNET calls for International Women's Day to break the silence! On March 8, the #againstviolence campaign will start: Consumers can send a signal of solidarity with their hands painted blue. A video explains how the action works. "We are targeting politicians and companies, because fashion brands need to do much more to protect women in their suppliers," says FEMNET consultant Sina Marx. "Together with consumers, we show our solidarity with local seamstresses, but we also want to point out that violence against women is still a problem in Germany too," adds CEO Gisela Burckhardt. background informations on the campaign:www.femnet.de/gegengewaltpictureDownload the high-resolution press photovideoVideo on YouTube contact FEMNET e.V.
