E-mail protest campaign - Call against resistance to the Supply Chain Act

Since spring 2020, we have come much closer to a supply chain law. Federal Ministers Heil and Müller have announced that they will present a law. The chancellor and more and more German companies are in favour of this step. However, there is resistance. Minister Altmeier opposes the project in order to protect companies. As part of the Supply Chain Act initiative, we therefore call for joint protest action against this blockade.

Companies in Germany had the chance to prove in the German government's human rights test that they are doing enough to comply with human rights along their supply chains on a voluntary basis. But they have not taken advantage of this opportunity, as recent figures prove: Only 22 percent of the companies surveyed by the Federal Government comply with their duty of due diligence under human rights law. Now it is necessary to comply with the agreement from the coalition agreement and the CDU party convention decision and to quickly launch a supply chain law. Opposition comes from business associations, in front of which Minister of Economic Affairs Altmeier faces. The companies fear a competitive disadvantage through a supply chain law and therefore do not want to accept liability for the production standards that lead to human rights violations and environmental pollution. The local factory workers work under inhumane conditions so that consumers can shop cheaply in this country. This is conscious of all actors, but no one wants to take responsibility. It is worth it: It has been shown that companies that know their supply chains and rely on reliable partnerships are more resilient to crises. That is why such a step would mean a sustainability boost for the German economy.

60 companies are in favour

The coronavirus crisis has made it clear to us that our current economy is neither fair nor sustainable. It wasn't even before the crisis. In addition, due to the cancellations of the suppliers and the closures of the factories, numerous seamstresses lost their jobs.

That's why it's time to act! Against the blockade of Altmeier, we support the protest call of the Initiative Supply Chain Act.
