Fair breakfast, fair fashion and change of clothes at Münsterplatz

Bonn. "All-round fair" will take place on Saturday, September 28, at Münsterplatz: As part of Fair Week 2019, an alliance of initiatives and associations invites you to a public fair breakfast from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fairly traded coffee, tea, spreads and many other delicacies await visitors, as well as the presentation of fair-produced clothing at a fashion show as a highlight.

The organizers want to show that fair trade can convince not only with fair prices and good working conditions, but also with quality and style. Following an official welcome by Mayor Gabriele Klingmüller, the organising organisations will present gender equality at various stands and interviews on fair trade, sustainability issues and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5.

This year, gender equality will also be the focus of the nationwide Fair Week. The face of poverty is still predominantly female: Of the approximately 700 million people living in extreme poverty worldwide, around 70 percent are women. Women usually get less money than men for the same work, they are less likely to take up leadership positions, they own much less land than men, they usually don't get loans, many are exposed to daily discrimination, including sexualized violence, and girls are less likely to attend school than boys.

For this purpose, women often represent the majority in low-paid, simple jobs, such as in flower production or in the textile industry, where 60 to 90 percent of women work, depending on the country. This is where excessively long working hours and lawlessness come together with workplaces that are hazardous to health. Four fashion shops or labels from Bonn and the region will show at the ‘Rundum Fair’ how the production of shirts, skirts, dresses and trousers can be different. In addition, Zesabo, the central warehouse for donations in kind in Bonn, presents an alternative to fast and disposable fashion with a change of clothes. Breakfast is available to visitors free of charge, so everyone can convince themselves that fair trade products taste good! The ecological breakfast treats are donated by local retailers and organic farms and come from fair trade or the Bonn area.

For those who want to move a little after breakfast, the Greenwalkers will then offer a consumer-critical city tour, this time on the subject of football and fair play – in sports, everyday life and world trade.

The organisers of the ‘Rundum Fair’ include the women’s rights organisation Femnet, the steering group Fair Trade Town Bonn, the Greenwalker, the Catholic City Dean’s Office Bonn, the Local Agenda Office of the City of Bonn, terre des hommes Bonn, the Consumer Centre and the Weltladen. They all share the desire to make fair trade more effective and to convince more people of the benefits.

The Rundum Fair is supported almost exclusively by volunteers and supported by Engagement Global, the Federal City of Bonn and Fairtrade Germany.
