From throwing away to appreciating people & materials On 25 November 2021, the new solidarity and education campaign #eintshirtzumleben for more sustainability and fairness in the global fashion and textile industry will start. Bonn. The Bonn-based women's rights organization FEMNET e.V. will launch the five-month solidarity and education campaign #onetshirtto live. At the center is the T-shirt as a symbol of fast-paced cheap fashion. The goal is to create awareness of the value of fashion. Premiere: Collaboration with artists For the first time, FEMNET collaborates with renowned German artists and designers who set a political signal against throwing away and for appreciating fashion and its makers: They donate a custom-made work of art and call on other creatives to upcycle their own T-shirts. Saskia Bellem, Project Manager #eintshirtzumleben at FEMNET: ‘A T-shirt is a valuable material. For us consumers, it is ideally a beloved companion in life. For the producers at the beginning of the supply chain, however, it is a livelihood. We want to emphasise this high value through the art campaign and upcycling.” Participatory action in social media With the launch of the campaign on 25 November, a broad-based participatory action on social media will start: People tell the story of their favorite T-shirt on Instagram and Facebook with selfie photos or videos. At the same time, textile workers from the Global South tell their own story in selfie mobile phone videos. So they will be visible and audible as human beings. November 25th as the International Day against Violence against Women is not chosen by chance: It should point out that structural and sexual violence are still an integral part of the daily work of women in the global textile sector. Dialogue between seamstresses and porters People at both ends of the supply chain enter into dialogue. This dialogue can generate appreciation for the person who makes the shirt and the material it contains. "We are convinced that people are committed to something as soon as it comes close to them, and by reflecting on the value of my old favourite shirt and symbolically being able to get to know the seamstress of this shirt, my relationship to this garment and the human being becomes concrete," said Bellem. The aim of the campaign, which also includes workshops, lectures and cooperations with universities and student initiatives, is a more critical fashion consumption and a more conscious examination of resources and working conditions in the global fashion and textile industry. Completion: 24 April 2022 at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Cologne All creative contributions and the donated works of art will be displayed in an online gallery on March 1st. eintshirtzumleben.de shown. The artworks will be exhibited at a major closing event with talks, workshops, fashion show on 24 April 2022 in the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne and then raffled off. #eintshirtzumleben is funded by the Stiftung Umwelt und Entwicklung NRW.
