Art instead of consumption: T-shirt art against disposable fashion

Pipilotti Rist, Frank Schätzing, Marcel Odenbach, Pia Fries and 15 other renowned artists set an example for sustainability in the textile industry. They create works of art from their own T-shirts, which are now available in a Online gallery on display and ‘fairlost’ on Rana Plaza Memorial Day.

Bonn. On Tuesday, March 1, the Bonn-based women's rights organization FEMNET e.V., as part of its solidarity and education campaign #eintshirtzumleben, launched a Online gallery Published with 19 T-shirt artworks by nationally and internationally established artists. The artists, including Pipilotti Rist and Frank Schätzing, Marcel Odenbach and Pia Fries, each made a work of art from a private t-shirt.

They emphasize the value of the T-shirt, which has become the epitome of disposable fashion for FEMNET. Thematically, the artists deal with animal welfare or feminism, climate migration or exploitation, among other things, and thus make strong statements for more appreciation and fairness in the global textile industry.

“The fast pace of fashion is a huge problem with fatal effects on people and the environment. We urgently need a rethink! We want to contribute to this with our #eintshirt campaign and the artists with their message", explains FEMNET campaign coordinator Saskia Bellem.

The online gallery From installation and sculpture to painting and calligraphy to writing and kinetics, it covers an enormous range of artistic genres. The works of art shown here (with the exception of the work of Claus Föttinger) can be won:

As part of a major closing event with talks, information, live music and fair fashion show, they will be exhibited under the moderation of ‘Green Janine’ Janine Steeger on Sunday, 24 April 2022 in the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne and then raffled off. A lot will be awarded to those who from now on will receive a self-upcycled shirt on the #onetshirtto liveSubmit campaign page.

"Upcycling - i.e. the creative reworking and upgrading of old to new - is intended to encourage participants to engage with the material and work performance that is in textiles", says Bellem. "We can all make the same contribution to change, which is why the format of the fair draw in return gives all participants the same chance of winning."

Details of the program will follow in April.
