European firewall fell, human rights protections sacrificed - Supply Chain Act initiative condemns EU alliance with right-wing extremists

Press release of the Supply Chain Initiative, of which FEMNET is a member

Today, the positioning on the Omnibus I package was voted again in the European Parliament – after no agreement was reached on the proposal of the Committee on Legal Affairs two weeks ago. Today's majority was achieved by the votes of the right-wing and far-right factions.

Sofie Kreusch comments on the Supply Chain Act initiative:

The common majority of the European People’s Party and far-right political groups has weakened the EU Supply Chain Directive beyond recognition – a political breach with immediate consequences for the protection of human rights and the environment, as well as the political stability of the EU.

It repeats at European level what we experienced in Germany earlier this year: Contrary to repeated affirmations and without necessity, the CDU and CSU have entered into an alliance with the right-wing extremists and have finally brought down the firewall to the far right. Driven by the far-right, the Union is sacrificing key achievements for the global protection of human rights. The impact will be felt harshly by those affected in the supply chains of German companies. Those who ally themselves with rights to overturn European standards of protection accept that child labour, forced labour and environmental destruction will once again become a business model.

The Supply Chain Act initiative therefore calls on the German Federal Government to urge in the upcoming trilogue that the core human rights obligations of the EU Supply Chain Directive be restored. If this does not succeed, Germany may not agree to the Omnibus I package. Europe must not allow its values to be eroded under the guise of deregulation.
