Pressemeldungen - Unternehmensverantwortung & Lieferkettengesetz © FEMNET 10 September 2024 Henry Mathews Award to Dr. Gisela Burckhardt and FEMNET Joint press release from the Association of Critical Shareholders and FEMNET Annual meeting of the Association of Critical Shareholders on 14 September 2024 in Cologne discusses the Supply Chain Act. Cologne/Bonn. At the annual meeting of the Association of Critical Shareholders, experts will discuss whether the German Supply Chain Act has already had a positive effect and what expectations are associated with the European Supply Chain Act. This year, the umbrella organisation is awarding its group-critical Henry Mathews Prize to Dr. Gisela Burckhardt and the organisation FEMNET. The long-standing campaign work of FEMNET and the Supply Chain Act initiative has contributed to the adoption of the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act by the German Bundestag in 2023. The women’s rights organisation FEMNET, co-founded by Dr Gisela Burckhardt in 2007, is committed to combating the exploitation and rights of women in the global clothing industry – with political engagement in Europe, educational work at local universities and schools, and a mutual legal assistance fund for affected women in the Global South. Dr. Gisela Burckhardt and other FEMNET employees have repeatedly participated in general meetings of German textile and sporting goods companies such as Hugo Boss and Adidas and called on the companies to ensure compliance with social standards throughout the supply chain. “FEMNET, together with the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) and on behalf of the local trade union in Bangladesh, the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF), submitted one of the first complaints to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) against IKEA and Amazon,” says Dr Gisela Burckhardt. ‘Both companies produce in Bangladesh in factories that are not subject to the Accord fire and building protection agreement because the two large companies have not yet signed the Accord, unlike some 200 other textile companies, which are mainly European.’ The Association of Critical Shareholders awards the Henry Mathew's Prize since 2007, in order to strengthen civil society resistance against reckless corporate power.
