News about Our Work - © vanngo-ng - pexels.com 24 September 2025 Fair play also for nature: Sportswear as a threat to biodiversity Jerseys, shorts and training jackets are rarely suspected of being a risk to the environment. But experts warn: Sports textiles contribute significantly to the loss of biodiversity through microplastics made from synthetic fibres, high pesticide and water consumption in cotton cultivation and the clearing of species-rich forests for viscose. We will talk about this in a webinar to which we cordially invite you. With the EU strategy for sustainable textiles and new guidelines on producer responsibility, pressure is now also growing on sports clubs. They should pay more attention to ecological criteria when purchasing. Previous initiatives by the German Olympic Sports Federation or the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation have focused primarily on sports facilities, rather than on the clothing itself. "Sports clubs bear responsibility here, which has often been overlooked so far," says Bettina Faust of the Global Nature Fund. "Conscious purchasing decisions can stabilise supply chains while protecting biodiversity." In order to inform about risks and opportunities for action, the Global Nature Fund and the women's rights organization FEMNET invite you to an online seminar on 7 October 2025. Under the title ‘Securing Biodiversity, Strengthening Supply Chains’, Louisa Lösing - Deputy Head of the Enterprise and Biodiversity Unit at the Global Nature Fund - provides insights into the ecological consequences of textile production and outlines strategies for more sustainable procurement. Participation in the webinar is free of charge. Registrations are now possible online.
