News - #SolidarityWorks! © NGWS The situation of textile worker Nazma Akter cannot be solved without help Nazma Akter has been working in a textile factory in Dhaka for five years. After severe pay cuts at the start of the lockdown, she and her family have to live without a salary for two months. Like many other textile workers in Bangladesh, Nazma relies on food donations, which we support with our Corona Emergency Fund. Nazma Akter works at the Masud Apparel Ltd. factory in Dhaka Bangladesh. At the beginning of the corona pandemic, her family leaves the city and has been living in her home village in the countryside ever since. Nazma is left alone. In March, due to the factory closure and contract cancellations, she received only 60% of her salary, in the following months, the salary is not paid. With her income, Nazma also has to support her family, who sends her money regularly. On some days, she abstains from food because she simply lacks the money to do so. During this difficult time, Nazma is abandoned by her husband, who does not support her financially after the separation. This puts a lot of strain on Nazma mentally. She looks to the future with fear and does not know how she and her family will survive the next few months with their low wages. There are about 5,000 factories in Bangladesh. 80% of employees are women. Since April 26, many factories have resumed production, but not at full capacity. Many workers still do not receive their full wages and, like Nazma, depend on support for themselves and their families. With the Corona Emergency Fund, we support our local partners so that those affected can be provided with the essentials for life. Donate online now back
