News - The Partnership for Sustainable Textiles (Textiles Partnership) 05 November 2018 Civil society in the Textile Alliance organises a Speakers Tour on "Violence against women in the workplace" from 5-16.11.2018 Gender-based violence against women is one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. According to estimates, more than 30% of all women have already experienced them. Two activists from India report on approaches to how women in the clothing industry can defend themselves and how we can support them in doing so. The speakers MARY VIYAKULA, 43 years, has been an employee for many years and has been managing director of SAVE (Social Awareness & Voluntary Education), an NGO in Tamil Nadu that has existed since 1993. The NGO's office is located in Tiruppur, known as the City of T-Shirts. SAVE is a partner of FEMNET and the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC). As Programme Director, she leads the Labour Resource Centre (LRC), a SAVE training programme that educates workers about their rights and provides training for trade unions. She has also conducted numerous surveys on the working conditions of women in spinning mills and factories. DEEPIKA RAO, 33 years, worked for three years for Cividep India. The NGO in Bangalore, Karnataka investigates the working and living conditions of workers in global supply chains. Cividep uses the results of this research to advocate for better wages, safer jobs and against discrimination in factories that produce for global brand companies. Deepika holds a bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering and a master's degree in Social Entrepreneurship. In a research project, she conducted surveys on sexual harassment among migrant workers in the textile industry in Bangalore. Before joining Cividep, she worked as an engineer on an oil tanker.
