News - The Partnership for Sustainable Textiles (Textiles Partnership) 27 February 2024 Where we stand and where we want to go – social and environmental supply chains Review of civil society representatives in the Sustainable Textiles Alliance (2023) The Textile Alliance adopted a new structure in 2022/2023 and revised its reporting formats. With the German Supply Chain Act and the ongoing processes for an EU Supply Chain Act, the framework conditions changed, which required further development from analysis to implementation. The focus is now on the implementation of due diligence and impact on the ground in the areas of purchasing practices and living wages, gender equality, complaint mechanisms and remedies, as well as the circular economy and climate. The aim is to go beyond legal requirements and achieve continuous improvements in the producing countries. The initiative brings together companies, NGOs, trade unions, standard organisations and the German government to drive social and ecological transformation. This Civil society balance sheet (PDF) provides a critical analysis of developments and uses examples to shed light on the effects of the new structure, especially in the context of the focus topics. Companies’ progress reports and roadmaps published from November 2023 have been used for this purpose. However, from the point of view of civil society, the reorientation so far has not yet brought the expected progress, in particular as regards the participation of rights holders and trade unions. Greater involvement of strategic partners such as the Asia Floor Wage Alliance is urgently needed to ensure employee involvement in risk analysis and mitigation. The balance sheet shows that effective stakeholder engagement and the minimisation of structural risks still need to be improved.
