FEMNET supports joint statement on strong protection standards in Europe
FEMNET has signed the joint statement "Strong standards protect people, democracy and livelihoods". Together with more than 150 organisations, companies, associations and scientists, we appeal to the Federal Government and the European institutions not to weaken the protection of human rights, the environment and democracy in favour of a supposed reduction in bureaucracy.
Many existing rules at EU level are currently being called into question with reference to competitiveness and simplification. The signatories of the statement warn that important standards of protection could be undermined. Clear and effective rules not only protect the rights of employees and consumers, as well as our natural livelihoods, but also create a level playing field.
For FEMNET, the protection of human rights along global supply chains is of particular importance. Mandatory due diligence helps companies take responsibility for the impact of their actions and promote decent working conditions. A weakening of these regulations would particularly affect those whose rights are already often violated today.
Together with the other signatories, we therefore call for a European policy based on transparency, democratic participation and binding standards of protection. Because only strong rules create trust, planning security and the basis for a socially just and sustainable economy.
