Feminist development policy for sustainable development - FEMNET opinion on the new guidelines of the BMZ

Under the new Minister Svenja Schulze, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has presented its future guideline ‘For a feminist development policy’ and promises a paradigm shift. ‘The BMZ takes care in all development projects to address gender equality and, in particular, to specifically promote women, girls and other marginalised groups and to involve them on an equal footing’, the new guideline states.

This is intended to achieve greater social justice for all people. However, the BMZ falls short of the goals for this course: It sees the causes of gender inequality primarily in cultural norms. Important economic and political influencing factors are not identified in the guideline and are not sufficiently taken into account in the target projects.

FEMNET examines these factors in an opinion and recommends supplementing the principles and objectives of the BMZ's new guideline.
