Factsheet: Microfibers - danger from the wardrobe

Around 60 percent of the world's clothing now contains polyester. Cheap synthetic fibres are the major driver of the fast-fashion industry – and turn out to be a disaster for the oceans. Fish larvae, arrowworms and various crustaceans swallow massive amounts of tiny plastic particles, so-called microplastics. Although these are primarily fragments of larger plastic parts, synthetic textiles are also an important source. Because garments lint with every wash: A single fleece jacket can release up to one million fibers per wash cycle.
