Sustainability is sustainable: Representative Greenpeace survey on buying behaviour, wearing time and use of alternatives to buying new fashion

This report compares the results of this year's representative survey on Germans' handling of clothing with surveys from 2015 and 2019. Consumers between the ages of 18 and 69 were surveyed. Questions were asked, such as: How many clothes are in the closet in Germany? How long are they worn? Are clothes and shoes still being repaired? How much are the alternatives to buying new clothes – such as changing clothes, professional rental services or second-hand shops and online offers – used in everyday life? What are the difficulties in using the alternatives and what demands do the Germans have on politics and industry? What future infrastructure do we need to make sustainable use of the textiles resource possible?

This year's online survey was conducted by Institut Nuggets Market Research & Consulting GmbH in June 2022 on behalf of Greenpeace. 1002 people between the ages of 18 and 69 were surveyed in Germany. It paints a comprehensive picture of the everyday handling of fashion in today's German society. The representative surveys from 2015 and 2019 were also conducted by nuggets.
