Chapter 2 first sets out the problems in the textile and clothing industry. Chapter 3 describes seals and signs that consumers can pay attention to when shopping for clothing and classifies them in relation to the principles of fair trade. In Chapter 4, three alliances and campaigns that promote fair and ecological clothing in various ways are presented as examples. Wardrobe change: Recommendations for the EU Strategy for Sustainable Textiles: from Environmental Civil Society Organisations The EU is one of the biggest global markets for textiles and home to many of the sector’s most powerful companies. Decades of voluntary self-regulation have led to textiles and clothing value chains becoming synonymous with the use of huge amounts of our planet’s finite natural resources, pollution from hazardous chemicals, the production of high levels of waste, poor working conditions, and human rights violations. To end the global overuse of resources and the transgression of planetary boundaries, all industries need to change; The textile industry is no exception. In this position paper, ‘Wardrobe Change’, a coalition of environmental civil society organisations, is calling for the EU Textile Strategy to be a coherent overarching framework which ties together the many different policies that are needed to set Europe on a transformative path to sustainable textile production and consumption. Workwear made in Tunisia: Labour rights violations in factories producing for European brands Although many studies have been conducted in recent years related to the working conditions and human rights violations of workers in the garment manufacturing industry, there is a lack of specific information on workwear manufacturing units. As workwear for European brands is produced in Tunisia, among others, the objective of this research is to investigate labour and international human rights standards in the workwear sector in Tunisia through a) desk research revealing the importance and development of the workwear sector in the Tunisian economy, and b) a field study on a sample of four different factories producing for three European workwear brands. Thus, the study investigates the nature of the relations between the different actors of this sector (the brands, platforms, factories). The research findings show that the nature of employment in this sector is implied by low wages, job insecurity due to fixed-term (short-term) contracts, and little bargaining power. Mehr Details
