Dear friends of FEMNET,

our celebration of the tenth anniversary of FEMNET in October casts its shadows ahead, and so this newsletter is also dedicated to this gratifying occasion.

We look forward to meeting you in person at our anniversary event on 20 October 2017 in Bonn, where our anniversary booklet is also available to take with you, but you are also welcome to request it from us, as explained below.

We wish you a stimulating read,

Your FEMNET team.

Political commitment

FEMNET publishes roadmap as part of the textile alliance

As a member of the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles, FEMNET has published a catalogue of measures (Roadmap). For 2017, a total of 130 action plans were submitted. The creation of the roadmap was mandatory for every member of the Textile Alliance, but the publication was still voluntary this year. Of course, the federal government has also created a roadmap and published it, and so far 17 companies have dared to show their roadmap and thus their goals for 2017 to the public. Most companies are more concerned about transparency. Also the Twenty civil society members of the Textile Alliance have issued a roadmap, although the given question grid relates little to the activities of civil society and their political commitment extends far beyond their participation in the Textile Alliance.

Up-to-date information on the situation in Bangladesh: Visit of Kalpona Akter and Mim Akter to Germany on the 17th. - 27.10.2017

Poster FEMNET round trip 2017

Wages in Bangladesh's clothing industry are among the lowest in the world. The working conditions are catastrophic and there are always accidents with many dead and injured. When thousands of workers went on strike for a higher minimum wage in the Ashulia textile region in December 2016, factory owners and the government relentlessly struck back: 600 workers and trade unionists have been charged, 1,600 have been fired, and 26 have been detained.

At the invitation of FEMNET and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, two women from Bangladesh visit us: Kalpona Akter from the NGO Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity (BCWS) and Mim Akter, a trade unionist.

Among other things, we organize a workshop with them and trade unionists from Germany, and they visit our university partners. There will be a public event with them in Cologne on 23 October.

We will send you the FEMNET anniversary booklet on request

In September, our anniversary booklet will be published with a review of the past ten years, an overview of our activities and an outlook for the future. In it you will find, among other things, a chronology that traces the most important FEMNET milestones and how a small club with one employee and 15 members became an association with more than ten employees and more than 100 members.

Donors and activists explain why they are committed to FEMNET, and all projects introduce themselves briefly. In interviews with founding member Ines Holthaus and CEO Gisela Burckhardt, you will learn about the biggest successes and challenges of the past decade.

The booklet is available for take away at the party, but we will also be happy to send it to you by post. Please, email us your address to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

My wish for 10. Birthday: Permanent donation instead of gifts

Gisela Burckhardt

In ten years we have already achieved a lot together. Now is the time to measure politics and companies by their declarations of intent and to demand concrete action for fair work and strong women. For this we need a long breath and your support.

Become a permanent FEMNET donor. As a long-term sponsor, you strengthen our influence and the effectiveness of political work and contribute to sustainably improving the working conditions of textile workers. “Fair work – strong women” – together we will make it happen.
