Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO), Bangladesh

"Environment and Social Development Organization – ESDO" is a non-profit and non-governmental research organization based in Bangladesh. ESDO is dedicated to spreading awareness about the importance of environmental conservation, safeguarding biodiversity, and maintaining ecological equilibrium.

The organization's mission is to foster and promote an environmental movement through an inclusive democratic framework that involves various social groups. ESDO provides them with ideas, information, and leadership to address climate change and promote a safe, sustainable, and toxic-free world.

Since its official establishment in 1990, ESDO has concentrated on raising awareness within the broader community about how human activities adversely affect the environment. ESDO strives to enhance the livelihoods, socio-economic status, and environmental education of some of the most vulnerable communities in Bangladesh. The organization invests in individuals who are passionate about environmental protection by providing essential resources and capacity-building support. As a pioneering organization in the ban on plastic bags in Bangladesh, ESDO aims to ensure self-reliant urban and rural communities that coexist harmoniously with their healthy environment.

How FEMNET Collaborates with ESDO:

As part of a multi-stakeholder partnership focused on worker- and community-based monitoring, FEMNET collaborates with ESDO to empower communities residing in close proximity to the textile industry in Ashulia/Dhaka. They collect data on environmental pollution and health hazards and use this information to negotiate improvements with local authorities. Based on the data collected through worker- and community-based monitoring, dialogue structures are established with businesses, the scientific community, and the government to develop and pilot solutions for existing issues in Dhaka.
