Rana Plaza Memorial Day: Action Theatre #Violence in Bonn

A violent scene in the middle of Bonn's city centre: Again and again the overseer raises his hand against the seamstress and leaves a blue handprint on her white clothes with every symbolic hitting, pinching, holding. Exhausted, her head sinks to the table. “Faster! There is no pause now! Back to work!" On the occasion of the Rana Plaza Memorial Day, Bonn activists drew attention to the problematic working conditions in the fashion industry with an action theatre on 24 April 2019.

Through a megaphone, passers-by were informed about the factory collapse of Rana Plaza, the high performance pressure of chord work, the poor working conditions and the experiences of violence suffered by the workers. With a blue handprint, visitors were able to set an example against violence against women themselves and found information about (un)fair clothing, working conditions in the textile industry and consumer alternatives at the action table. The action was organized by FEMNET and the open FEMNET meeting "FairQuatschen" carried out.

Never again Rana Plaza!

The Rana Plaza collapse on April 24, 2013 was the textile industry's worst factory accident to date, killing 1,134 people and injuring thousands more. The seamstresses had already noticed the cracks in the walls the day before - but they were forced to go in, otherwise they would have lost their work. The employees of a bank in the same building had already been evacuated at the time of the accident.

Accidents and human rights violations must finally stop. FEMNET calls for the introduction of legal regulations for corporate due diligence and supports the #fairbylaw petition by Lisa Jaspers, which starts on Rana Plaza Memorial Day: Sign the #fairbylaw petition!
