First accident insurance for textile workers in Bangladesh

Bonn. Over a decade ago, in April 2013, the devastating collapse of the Rana Plaza building occurred with over 1000 fatalities, revealing the urgent need for improved safety measures in the garment industry. Since then, significant progress has been made through the Accord safety agreement, but accidents at work remain a sad reality.

To date, workers and their families in Bangladesh who have been injured or even killed in accidents at work have not received sufficient compensation or financial support. This lack of protection is addressed by the groundbreaking pilot project EIS (Employment Injury Scheme), initiated by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The pilot, which was launched in 2021, is now supported by over 40 international brands such as KIK, H&M, C&A, Primark, Tchibo and Puma. Monthly compensation payments can effectively protect workers and their families from poverty. The 5-year pilot project is soon to be transferred to a national system and pave the way for sustainable employer-financed accident insurance in Bangladesh.

During their tour of Germany from 7 to 13 April , trade unionist Tithi Afrin and labour law expert Md. Shahinur Rahman will give an insight into the opportunities and challenges of this project, shed light on the current security situation in factories in Bangladesh and, above all, explain the situation of textile workers. Information on the dates for her lectures can be found below or under the following link.

Interested media representatives can participate in press conferences with Ms. Tithi Afrin and Mr. Md Shahinur Rahman on April 9.
