From Field to Fabric. Enhancing Due Diligence in Cotton Supply Chains.
This report investigates labor conditions on cotton farms in the Khargone and Barwani districts of Madhya Pradesh, India. The report finds evidence of child labor, including the worst forms of child labor, forced labor indicators such as debt bondage and abusive working conditions, and payment of wages below the state minimum wage. The report also highlights concerns about organic integrity on farms connected to the supply chain of Pratibha Syntex. Transparent has been engaging with buyers and suppliers since September 2023 to urge them to provide remediation to those harmed, strengthen their due diligence to prevent abuses, and work together to transform the sector into a more attractive destination for sourcing sustainable and ethically produced cotton.
