Hard work for soft fibers - labour rights violations in Indian gutting factories

Excessive working hours, low wages, lack of employment contracts - these grievances occur throughout the textile chain. The study presented by SÜDWIND, PRAYAS and INKOTA on working conditions in Indian gutting factories, where the raw cotton is processed into cotton fibres, draws attention to a relatively unknown stage of processing in cotton production in Germany. Based on a survey of workers from four gutting factories in the Indian state of Gujarat, conducted by SOUTHWIND partner PRAYAS at the end of 2014 and a study trip, the study paints an oppressive picture of the working world in cotton production and also provides an insight into the entire Indian textile and clothing production and its working conditions. As one of the four gutting factories has a certificate of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS, see Chapter 4), the working conditions in this factory appear to differ only slightly from the conditions in the conventional factories, according to the statements of the interviewed employees, an explanation of the GOT standard follows from the research results from India (Chapter 4). Chapter 5 also makes recommendations or conclusions with regard to the GOT standard.
