Dirty laundry: Dangerous chemistry in the washing drum - How fashion brands turn their customers into involuntary accomplices

The results show that the textile industry causes a pollutant cycle of global proportions: From the production of textiles with high use of chemicals to residues in the finished textiles to washing out. The direct pollution effects of the textile industry go far beyond the country of production.

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) from imported textiles pollute waters in European countries. This is the result of the present study by Greenpeace International. Washing garments made in Asia by international brands releases a significant proportion of these chemicals and discharges them into rivers, lakes and seas. There, NPE converts into the toxic and hormonally active chemical nonylphenol (NP). In the EU, the use of NPE and NP is prohibited or severely restricted. The content of NPE in fabric products before and after washing was investigated.
