Recherchetool für Materialien Like a slave! - seamstresses in the factories of El Salvador More than 70,000 people work in the clothing factories in El Salvador – in the maquilas. They sew branded goods from expensive clothing manufacturers, especially for the US market. In the countries of Central America, the maquilas are an important economic factor. They are enormously tax-advantaged by special laws. But: Labour rights are systematically violated in the Maquilas. The film impressively shows the reality of clothing production for the world market. Those who don't work have little chance. Systematically, pressure is exerted on the workers and in the end they have no chance of freeing themselves and their families from poverty. "We are slaves of the companies" is how embroiderer Jesús sums it up. Stickers are paid even worse than seamstresses in the maquila. As homeworkers, they are practically unsecured and work for themselves – it is difficult to get together with others. Sometimes family members help to complete the quantities required by the factories. The dresses are later sold in expensive boutiques in the United States.
