Ratification of ILO Convention 190 required

As part of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, FEMNET has proposed to call on the German government in an Open Letter on Women's Day on March 8 to finally ratify ILO Convention 190 against gender-based violence in the workplace. A total of 32 alliance members, including 17 companies, signed a letter to Minister Heil (Ministry of Labor) and Minister Schulze (BMZ).

ILO Convention 190 was adopted on June 21, 2019. The international convention defines sexual harassment and violence in the workplace for the first time, with a broad definition of the place of work. All places of work must be free of violence for all genders. This is the responsibility of the employer.

The Ministry of Labor has so far indicated that it fully supports the ILO convention, but that ratification is only possible if all EU member states are in favor. Some countries, such as Poland and Hungary, have so far refused. However, the EU countries Italy and Greece have signed ILO Convention 190. Ratification is possible even without a unanimous decision, as the ECJ ruled on 6.10.2021 regarding the Istanbul Convention.

We therefore call on the German government to finally act!
