National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF), Bangladesh

The National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) is the largest union in Bangladesh and has been working for the rights and human dignity of workers in the country's export-oriented garment industry since 1984.

NGWF has 101,696 members, over half of whom are women, with a total of 53,293 female members. NGWF's main office is in Dhaka, and it has ten additional branch offices located in different garment industrial zones including Chittagong, Savar, Ashulia, Mirpur, Gazipur, Konabari, Kashimpur, Narayangonj, Mirzapur, Tangail, and Valuka. President and co-founder Amirul Haque Amin received the International Nuremberg Human Rights Award in 2015 for his efforts. In the event of disasters in the garment industry - for example when the Rana Plaza building collapsed in April 2013 - NGWF organised protest demonstrations and demanded the arrest of the responsible factory owners. NGWF subsequently participated in the drafting of the Accord building and fire protection agreement for Bangladesh. NGWF organizes protests, demonstrations and petitions for fairer wages and occupational health and safety.

What we have achieved together with NGWF

For more than ten years, FEMNET has been supporting NGWF in its legal aid work for garment workers. In addition to training and awareness-raising, NGWF's main task is to successfully resolve cases, e.g. compensation payments in the event of dismissal, and accompanies its demands with public demonstrations.

In the period from October 2021 to September 2022 alone, our partner organisation was able to obtain a total of around 91,000.00 € in compensation payments for 407 workers.
